Steptoe qualified as a doctor in 1939, the year the second world war broke out. He immediately joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a surgeon-lieutenant#During the war Steptoe was taken prisoner by the Italians and held for two years until the downfall of Mussolini in 1943#Steptoe wrote a book on his early interest - laparoscopy - in 1967.
